WITHOUT KINDER, THE cottage was a different place—dark and quiet and not particularly welcoming, but it was the only home I had at the moment. As I wandered listlessly through the empty rooms, I imagined the clicking of a dog’s nails on the floor, and once a faraway whine. All of these familiar Kinder-sounds were part of my life. The deep, thick silence was alien. I wished the rain were beating against the windows with thunder crashing overhead.

Kinder and I had never been separated. Could she possibly find her way back to me from wherever they’d taken her? My clever Kinder-come-home would have to help herself. Mac was powerful and resourceful, but not a superhero. If my old enemies, the road ragers, were the ones who had taken my car, they were skilled at evading the law. Mac had never seen them.

But the police were usually the first to hear breaking news. If the body of a brown and white collie had been found on the freeway or some country road, Mac would hear about it.

Pushing away the heartbreaking image, I changed into dry clothes and went out in search of a telephone, knocking on three doors before I found someone home, a young woman I’d seen on the beach. She invited me in, and I reserved a rental car and then called Angela who offered to drive me to North Port in the morning to pick it up.

Back in the cottage, I set to work creating ten lost dog notices, sketching Kinder’s likeness, writing her name, describing her color and friendly personality.

Ten times is a charm.

Still, the whole evening stretched before me, with the tornado watch in effect and the thunder I’d wished for rumbling far to the north. Unable to think of anything else to occupy the time and unwilling to work on my story when my dog was in peril, I made another batch of notices.

Keeping busy gave me a feeling of control, but like the fading colors of the world, it was an illusion. Someone else was in charge and would be until I took back what had been stolen from me.
